1941 World Peace Date Slogan Cancels and Handstamps
Thailand was caught in a tricky predicament politically in 1941. France had fallen to the Germans and England's fate was in question with daily bombing of London and the losses in North Africa. Japan had taken possession of French Indo China and was on Thailand's doorstep. Thailand tried to maintain its neutrality under great pressure from Japan not to. Eventually when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th (December 8th in Asia due to the international date line).
Thailand was also invaded along with British Hong Kong and the American Commonwealth of the Philippine Islands. A day of fighting ensued in Thailand and the Prime Minister eventually negotiated a safe passage through southern Thailand for the Japanese to attack British Malaysia and eventually Singapore. Thailand under its Prime Minister was considered a Japanese puppet state now similar to Manchukuo in northern China.
On January 25th 1942 they officially declared war on the United States and Great Britain though this was never officially recognized in Washington. The efforts of the Thai ambassador who initiated the creation of the Free Thai movement with The Office of Strategic Services (the OSS predecessor of the CIA) to continue resistance and partisan effort against the Japanese in Thailand during the war.
To offer a different sceptical opinion on Thailands position at the time I refer to a French Philitelic Blog on the Franco - Siamese War of early 1941 (January -March)
OCTOBER 1941: A mechanical postmark with flame "THAILAND / IMPLORES FOR / WORLD PEACE" is put into service in Bangkok, an ally of the Japanese, once again showing their duplicity two months before Pearl Harbour.
